Toxic Substances

The Gippsland Lakes have been exposed to nutrients, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, fungicides and herbicides from agricultural run-off as well as heavy metals from industry.

Years of inaction has led to the accumulation of these toxic compounds. Even Professor Barry Hart (former Director of the Monash Water Studies Centre and former Chairman of the Gippsland Lakes Taskforce) told The Age back on the 07 December 2008 that “Gippsland Lakes management is a farce”.
